Our absolute favorite and one of the fastest growing of the groundcover juniper plants, the ‘Bar Harbor’ Juniper is a dense, ground hugging evergreen to about 6 inches height with a spread of 8 feet or more. The feathery dark blue-green foliage turns to an attractive silvery plum-purple color during winter. Unlike other low-growing spreading junipers Bar Harbor grows uphill as well as downhill on steep slopes.

Growing 6 to 8 inches tall and spreading more quickly than other junipers to 6 feet or more in width, the Bar Harbor Juniper is perhaps one of the best of the best junipers for use on embankments, hillsides and slopes to control erosion. Also a nice groundcover in sunny landscape borders and larger home foundation plantings. It will cascade over walls and is a great choice to underplant small trees such as Japanese Maple and Crape Myrtle. A fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  4 to 6 feet apart for mass plantings; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants

Bar Harbor Juniper is easy to grow in most any well-drained soil of average to low fertility. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soil can cause root rot and other harmful plant diseases. Best in full sun however will tolerate some light shade. We recommend at least 7 hours of direct sunlight per day.
